Agoura Hills, CA – (June 12, 2019) Wine Acuity, LLC, the organization who manages the Wine Tasting US Open championship, is holding the annual Wine Tasting US Open on July 14, 2019 at the historic Pierpont Inn in Ventura, CA. The two top teams of this event will go on to represent the USA in the World Wine Tasting Championship being held on October 12, 2019 in Chateau de Chambord in the Loire Valley, France.

The Wine Tasting US Open is the only road to be on TEAM USA for the World Wine Tasting Championship (WWTC). The winners of the US Open will be flown to France with airfare and accommodations paid for by Wine Acuity. Last year’s TEAM USA went on to take a respectable 14th place out of 23 teams competing.

Wine enthusiasts as well as wine professionals are welcome to compete in the US Open. The competition and scoring emulate the WWTC with each team of two tasting 12 wines (6 white and 6 red) from around the world. Teams must properly identify not only the varietal and region, but also the producer and vintage for each wine. Points are awarded for each correct answer and the two teams with the highest scores will become the four-person TEAM USA. The scores are all kept confidential, so it is a great way for professionals to hone their skills and for wine enthusiasts to learn about different wines.

Wine Acuity CEO, John Vilja, knows a thing or two about competitive wine tasting. Mr. Vilja was the team captain for TEAM USA in the 2016 WWTC and lead the team to an unprecedented third-place victory. “Blind wine tasting is a difficult thing to master, and often, wine enthusiasts and wine professionals feel intimidated to compete. However, with the US Open results being confidential, anyone can compete without fear of embarrassment.” Mr. Vilja adds, “It isn’t about being a wine expert. It is about being passionate for wine, having a desire to represent the US in a world event, and most importantly, it is about having fun. Plus, if you win, you receive a trip to France. There is no risk, only reward, with the US Open.”

Unlike the WWTC, spectators are allowed at the Wine Tasting US Open, and, for a fee, they can taste along with the competitors. Spectators will be able to taste all 12 wines being poured in the competition. There is also an iOS and Android Wine Acuity app that spectators can download, so they can enter their answers, and privately see how they would have done in the competition. The app will also have a list of the wines poured, so they can identify their favorites for the next time they are purchasing wine. The Wine Acuity app is also a great tool for practicing for the competition. It was originally created by Wine Acuity for that purpose, but other features have been added to make it a great blind wine tasting tool for home use.
